Expander

 (1) A signal processing device which is the inverse of a compressor, providing the gradual attenuation of signals that fall below a user-defined threshold. This process, known as expansion, reduces background noise and at the same time increases the dynamic range of the input signal.

(2) A synth, with out a keyboard or other master controller, often rack-mounted. Also called a tone module.
